The expansiveness of policing comes from the fact they are the first people who need to be on the scene when shit goes down and that can entail a wide array of duties when it comes to interacting with the public. People need to be separated, stories need to be taken, evidence needs to be collected, sometimes hostile individuals need to be disarmed or talked down...it's a very broad scope of things that a single person has to be responsible for because you can't simply assign a body to every one of those things without becoming cluttered and slowing the response. --- "It feels like I'm always wrong." The key thing about police is fast response. If you need help, you need help RIGHT NOW and trying to sure up a solution that fits your specific need sure as heck won't get that done in a timely manner. The way I see it, trying to redesign the concept of law enforcement would inevitably turn it back into whatever it was before simply by requiring expanded roles the more scenarios present themselves. --- "It feels like I'm always wrong." When you call for help, you get a specific service tailored to the situation with individuals who have training in that area instead of a catch-all law enforcement body who isn't necessarily responsible for their response. Basically I think it boils down to that people no longer want policing to be a component of law enforcement and instead law enforcement would be just that and only that.
